The St. Matthew Passion project
For our 50th anniversary concert, we wanted to do something really significant and challenging to mark the occasion. The St. Matthew Passion was a sizeable omission in our performance history, and so we embarked on a project: to plan and deliver a truly memorable one-off performance of Bach's masterwork, accompanied by all the bells and whistles that the period instrument ensemble the 18th Century Sinfonia could rustle up, a fresh-faced mob of schoolkids, and a positively mouth-watering line-up of soloists...and ourselves, divided into two choirs, directed from the harpsichord by our esteemed MD Keith Orrell.
Tickets for this event are available through the Stoller Hall box office.

We knew when we were planning the 50th anniversary season that we wanted to mark it with something big, something significant. The St. Matthew Passion had been a large gap in our performance history, and so it seemed a natural fit. But to stage a satisfying concert, with the forces and soloists fitting the occasion, at a venue suitable for the number of performers, would potentially risk losses that could wipe out our operating reserves. We needed help.
We decided to try a fundraising method we had never used before: crowdfunding. In order to reach beyond our usual supporters, we attempted to raise £5000 to fund our 50th anniversary performance of the Matthäus-Passion (its German title).
Reader, we did it!
On 17th October 2021 we successfully raised £6,100 ( + est. £1406.25 GiftAid) with 102 supporters in 28 days. Find out more about our crowdfunder project.
Thanks to the generosity of one of our members' employers, the cost of every seat sold for our St. Matthew Passion concert will be matched as a donation to the charity uk-med.org. From their website: "UK-Med is a frontline medical aid charity. Born of the NHS, we’ve been working for over 20 years towards a world where everyone has the healthcare they need when crises or disasters hit. Our register has hundreds of NHS medics who are rigorously trained for emergencies. Along with our global network of health professionals, we’re on-call to get to disaster zones at 24 hours’ notice and save lives."
You can also donate directly to their Ukraine appeal.
We think it only right that Bach's music be used in this way, and it will give a special resonance to the performance. Please donate, and or buy a ticket today!
